Understanding trauma and PTSD

Trauma is the lasting emotional response to a deeply distressing or frightening event. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can develop when those responses persist and disrupt daily life.

Trauma can come from one event or from prolonged experiences such as abuse or neglect. It is not a sign of weakness, and the symptoms are the mind’s attempt to protect you.

With evidence-based care, the nervous system can settle and the past can stop controlling the present. Healing is possible.

Common signs of PTSD

PTSD symptoms generally fall into a few patterns:

  • Intrusive memories, flashbacks, or nightmares
  • Avoiding reminders of the event
  • Feeling on guard, easily startled, or unsafe
  • Negative shifts in mood, beliefs, or sense of self
  • Trouble sleeping or concentrating
  • Emotional numbness or detachment from others
Please note: If trauma symptoms are overwhelming or include thoughts of self-harm, reach out for help right away.

Treatment options

Trauma-focused care is effective and well-studied:

  • Trauma-focused CBT, Prolonged Exposure (PE), and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Medication, when recommended by a provider
  • Body-based and grounding practices to calm the nervous system
