What is anxiety?

Anxiety is the body and mind’s natural response to stress, but anxiety disorders go further, they involve intense, persistent worry and fear that interferes with daily life.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health condition in the U.S., affecting tens of millions of people. They include generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, and phobias.

Anxiety is highly treatable. With the right support, most people learn to manage symptoms and reclaim the parts of life that anxiety had narrowed.

Common signs and symptoms

Anxiety affects the mind and body. Common symptoms include:

  • Excessive, hard-to-control worry about everyday things
  • Restlessness or feeling on edge
  • Racing heart, shortness of breath, or chest tightness
  • Trouble concentrating or mind going blank
  • Difficulty falling or staying asleep
  • Avoiding situations, places, or people that trigger fear
  • Panic attacks, sudden, intense waves of fear or dread
Please note: If anxiety is interfering with work, relationships, or daily life, talking to a professional can help.

Treatment options

Effective, well-researched treatments are available:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure therapy
  • Medication, when recommended by a provider
  • Grounding, breathing, and mindfulness practices
  • Lifestyle support, sleep, movement, and limiting caffeine
