You are not alone

Crisis Support

If you are in crisis right now, help is available this moment, free, confidential, and 24/7.

Need help right now? Support is available 24/7.

If you are thinking about suicide, please reach out now

A crisis can feel permanent, but the feelings driving it are not. Reaching out is not weakness, it is one of the bravest and most life-protecting things a person can do.

You do not need to be sure you are in danger to call. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is for anyone who is struggling, overwhelmed, or just needs someone to talk to. The people who answer are trained, calm, and there to listen without judgment.

Warning signs of a suicide crisis

If you notice these signs in yourself or someone else, treat it as urgent and reach out for help right away:

  • Talking about wanting to die, or feeling like a burden to others
  • Feeling hopeless, trapped, or in unbearable emotional pain
  • Looking for a way to end one’s life
  • Withdrawing, isolating, or saying goodbye to people
  • Giving away possessions or putting affairs in order
  • Extreme mood swings, rage, or sudden calm after a dark period
  • Increased use of alcohol or drugs
Please note: If someone is in immediate danger, do not leave them alone. Call 988 or 911 and stay with them.

How to help someone in crisis

  1. 1

    Ask directly

It is okay to ask: "Are you thinking about suicide?" Asking does not plant the idea, it opens a door and shows you care.

  2. 2

    Listen without judgment

Let them share. Do not minimize their pain or rush to fix it. Being heard is itself a relief.

  3. 3

    Keep them safe

Reduce access to anything that could be used for harm, and stay with them or make sure someone trusted can.

  4. 4

    Connect to help

Call or text 988 together, contact a mental health professional, or go to an emergency room.

  5. 5

    Follow up

Check in again in the days that follow. Continued, steady support makes a real difference.
