Understanding substance use disorders
A substance use disorder is a medical condition, not a moral failing. It changes how the brain handles reward, stress, and self-control, which is why willpower alone is rarely enough.
Addiction and mental health are deeply connected. Many people use substances to cope with depression, anxiety, or trauma, and substance use can deepen those struggles, raising the risk of crisis.
Treatment works. With the right combination of medical care, therapy, and support, people recover and rebuild their lives every day.
Signs of a substance use problem
It may be time to seek help if you or someone you know is experiencing:
- Using more, or for longer, than intended
- Wanting to cut down but being unable to
- Cravings or strong urges to use
- Continuing to use despite harm to health, work, or relationships
- Needing more to get the same effect, or withdrawal symptoms
- Giving up activities that used to matter
Paths to recovery
There is no single path. Effective options include:
- ✓Medical detox and medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
- ✓Inpatient, residential, and intensive outpatient programs
- ✓Individual and group therapy addressing underlying causes
- ✓Peer support such as AA, NA, and SMART Recovery
