Why it matters
The reason this exists.
A gatekeeper is someone in a position to recognize a crisis and refer someone to help — and anyone can be one. Whether you are a parent, neighbor, coworker, faith leader, or friend, you have the power to save a life.
This evidence-based program teaches ordinary people how to have difficult conversations, connect others with resources, and potentially prevent a tragedy. You do not need to be a mental health professional — you just need to care.
The QPR model
Three steps. Anyone can learn them.
Gatekeeper Training is built on a simple, evidence-based model: Question, Persuade, Refer. Three steps that turn an ordinary person into someone who can save a life.
Question — Ask directly
Ask directly about suicidal thoughts. Research shows asking does not increase risk — it reduces it. Learn how to ask: "Are you thinking about suicide?"
