Why it matters
The reason this exists.
Student-athletes face unique pressures that put them at higher risk for mental health crises. Between intense competition, performance expectations, injury concerns, and academic demands, young athletes often struggle silently.
Coaches see these students more than almost anyone, which puts them in the perfect position to notice warning signs and intervene. Our Coaches for Life Initiative gives coaches the knowledge and confidence to support athletes in crisis.
A coach’s journey
From sideline to lifeline.
The Coaches for Life program unfolds in steps. Here is the path every trained coach walks — from the first hour of certification to the day they spot a warning sign and act.
Mental Health First Aid
An 8-hour certification course on identifying and responding to mental health and substance use challenges.
Warning Signs Recognition
Learning to spot the behavioral, emotional, and physical indicators that an athlete may be struggling.
Conversation Skills
Practical strategies for starting difficult conversations and creating safe spaces for athletes to open up.
Crisis Intervention
Step-by-step protocols for responding when an athlete is in immediate danger.
Resource Referrals
A directory of local mental health resources and guidance on connecting athletes with professional help.
Ongoing Support
Access to consultation services and a peer support network for trained coaches.
A coach ready to save a life.
By the end of the program, a coach has the eyes to spot warning signs, the words to start the conversation, and the network to connect an athlete to real help.

“This training changed how I coach. I used to focus only on performance, but now I see the whole athlete. Last season I noticed warning signs in one of my players and was able to get him help before it was too late.”
